Pre-Concert Talk: Noh in Focus 1 – Knowing Noh

Friday 13 May 2016, 6:00pm, Hall One, Kings Place, London

Richard Emmert, Tokyo-based American Noh practitioner and founder of Theatre Nohgaku, talked about the history, aesthetic concepts, stories and performance traditions of noh, and provided insight about the repertories to be performed during the festival.

Yugen – The Mysterious Elegance of Classical Noh

Friday 13 May, 7:30pm, Hall One, Kings Place, London

This programme included highlights from the classical Noh plays Tenko and Toru, both by the foremost Noh playwright-performer Zeami (1363-1443).

Evan Parker Meets Noh Music

Friday 13 May 2016, Kings Place, London

The world renowned saxophonist Evan Parker, dubbed as one of ‘music’s greatest living instrumentalists’ (The Times), and ‘one of the world’s finest ensemble improvisers’ (Chicago Reader), encountered Noh flautist Yukihiro Isso.

Workshop: Noh in Focus 2 – Movement in Noh: The Dynamism of Stillness

Saturday 14 May, 11:30am, Hall Two, Kings Place, London

The master shite main-role actor, Yoshimasa Kanze, supported by Richard Emmert, taught the highly stylised movements of Noh for actors, dancers and anyone else interested in the delicate intensity of movement expression.

Workshop: Noh in Focus 3 – Music of Noh

Saturday 14 May, 2:00pm, St Pancras Room, Kings Place, London

This workshop led by Richard Emmert offered participants an opportunity to learn about the basic features of the music of noh, while giving them a chance to try the basic styles of Noh chant, as well as aspects of the four instruments of the Noh ensemble.

Noh Inspired 1 – Masking and Enmasking: Noh Theatre as a Strategy in Contemporary Art and Performance

This afternoon of presentations started with a screening from Simon Starling’s Project for a Masquerade (Hiroshima), which shows the making of contemporary Noh masks as a setting for a Cold War art drama.

Noh Inspired 2 – Cross-cultural Collaboration and Contemporary Music

UK composers including Sound and Music Portfolio composers Andrew Thomas and Nicholas Morrish-Rarity, whose Noh-inspired pieces premiered later that evening, discussed their own journeys into cross-cultural collaboration and its relevance to new music today.

This programme included highlights from two classical Noh masterpieces and premiers of Noh-inspired works by British composers Andrew Thomas and Nicholas Morrish-Rarity.
